The Project

Brief: Design a hand held vacuum cleaner based on the branding of a popular UK cleaning brand.

I chose ‘Method’ as my cleaning brand, their bottles use smooth organic shapes and longer silhouettes. To reflect this I designed the vacuum so that it can stand on its end (see top left image) to imitate the bottle outlines. This also makes the vacuum almost sculpture like so it could be stored in a visible location rather than hiding in a cupboard.

This project had two main aims: to improve our modelling skills in various materials including card/ blue foam and to better understand how branding can be reflected in the physical form of products. When making the foam model, I paid particular attention to the grip of the handle.

If I had the opportunity to make improvements to this design I would make the space around the handle larger so that people with different sized hands can grip it more easily.
